Welcome to Men’s Greek Fellowship in Orange City, Iowa.

This is a group focused on encountering the text of the New Testament in its original language. The Gospel transcends language, but much nuance is lost in translation, regardless of the best intentions and expertise of reliable translators. As we become more familiar with the original language, the constraints of our original language fade.

Commitment: 1 hour meeting per week plus ~90 minutes of homework. Vocabulary review on mobile devices is also advised, as an aid in overall retention.

A typical meeting will include:

§ Workbook and general review

§ Presentation of new material

§ Vocabulary introduction

§ Exegetical discovery

Where: We will be meeting weekly at New Hope Evangelical Free Church, starting in October.

Skill levels: The primary group is oriented at students with no prior experience, but all skill levels are invited. Depending on numbers of each level of fluency, we will separate for weekly classes and/or reading. Reading at an advanced level will consist of the Johannine epistles and the Didache, for starters.

Pronunciation: We will be using the High Koine pronunciation popularized by Dr Cristophe Rico of Polis Institute in Jerusalem. (δ, φ, θ, χ as aspirated stops rather than fricatives.). This pronunciation is the most accessible to native English speakers, while still sounding like a natural language. If you are more familiar with Erasmian pronunciation, please don’t be concerned. The adjustment to High Koine is rapid and intuitive.
